Donner Party Cookbook - with apologies

by Cathy Grafton on 09/11/11

Do you ever wonder what all those people at festivals do when you leave and they are on their own for the night?  Well at Rock Spring, we swap stories, sit around the campfire, eat campout cookout foods, but mostly we spend time together.

After two days with 15 or 20 others who share the same love of nature and craft - we bond pretty strongly - and we also share some amazingly crazy stories.  Two members of the group had traveled out west and came across the "Donner Party Cookbook" at a museum gift shop.  They neglected to buy it, thinking they would come across it later in their travels.  No such luck - well Saturday night we started imagining the recipes one might find in such a book.   I can only remember a few right now, finger food, comes to mind.  Apple Betty Brown, Suzie Sushi, Patty potatoes, BarbaraQ.  We had a darkly hilarious time thinking up horrible names and recipes.  Don't think poorly of us, we couldn't stop once we started and it seemed particularly funny as we sat outside on the edge of a woodland and prairie on a early fall evening with an almost full moon rising and coyotes and owls not far away.

I've added a picture of my new smaller "downsized" wedge tent - it all fits in my Mini-Cooper too.  Amazing.   Also a picture of one of my bee landscapes!
